WTF Has Happened To Technorati?

Technorati, once thought of as the central-hub of the blogosphere, has been taking a stumble as of late. Things were great for Technorati in earlier years. Somewhere along the line though, Technorati lost the fire. Has Technorati's time come and gone?

What has gone wrong?

A better question would be, what hasn't gone wrong? Beyond the recent "Topics" section addition, the site has made only miniscule improvements for the longest time. The Digg cloning idea, Where's the Fire, just made me want to ask what was Technorati thinking? The lack of a solid community with features to connect others is non-prevalent. It just doesn't end.

Things progressively worsened when the CEO decided to step down and the company decided fired off 8 of their workers. These things are all signs of big internal problems.

It is also bad when your developers blog has consisted of mostly bad news, but Technorati's developer blog has been just outright demoralizing in past months. Most of the recent stories have been of staff leaving the company and power outages.

WTF?

"Where's The Fire" (WTF) has been nothing but a disaster. It does not appear to be a hit amongst the Technorati community, and it is rare to see stories with over ten votes at times. It appears to be more effective as a tool for spammers who decide to advertise porn and erectile disorder treatments. There are ways to fixing this, but it might be a little too late to do so.

Since I brought up spam: attempting to use the Technorati tags to filter content results in the never ending list of porn links. Jennifer Lopez is great, but what does her being naked have to do with technology? I don't need that, and Technorati should have been developing ways for the community or themselves to effectively police this activity.

Is there any good coming from Technorati?

Not exactly. I for one am not a fan of their authority system for ranking blogs. There are an immense amount of ways to manipulate the ranking of blogs. The site's core functionality is easily scammed and taken advantage of, and is not an accurate representation of anything useful. It could be modified or enhanced in many ways, but the team just does not seem to have their priorities straight.

A ranking system should have multiple methods of computing that rank, not just one method. A single method of ranking a site could be easily scammed and in the case of Technorati, it is scammed on a daily basis. I would like to see them incorporate a way for the community to get involved in the ranking process of sites. It would be an interesting attempt and something fresh from Technorati. The current method of ranking, is simply broken.

According to Technorati, my personal blog, which has received barely a fraction of the traffic that Tech In Demand is receiving, ranks higher than this site. That makes absolutely no sense at all, and it would be frighteningly easy for me to manipulate this system to make either Tech In Demand or my personal blog's rank much higher. I am not concerned with this though, and would not bother, because Technorati is no good for ranking blogs in the current state. Everyone should understand this and accept it.

Is this the end?

No one knows what the future is for Technorati, but I do know that change are needed. The company should take a page or two from MyBlogLog or BlogCatalog which are steadily growing in popularity. Both of those services promote interaction with a community based around blogging. Technorati is failing to accomplish anything lately, except for disappointments all around.

Technorati fails as a ranking tool based on content and/or readership. I sometimes question myself and wish to question others: why even use Technorati? It tries to do too much, and fails to do any one specific thing wondrous. This could change, but the team just does not seem to have anything going for them.

Ironically enough, while writing this article, the Technorati was not functioning for over 30 minutes. It was dead. Was this a foresight for things to come?

Technorati does not seem to

Technorati does not seem to ping and update many blogs already...there are tons of questions asked on their authorities and also blog reactions not updated.

I hope so too. It would be

I hope so too. It would be a huge waste to have such a great website fail just because they couldn't start being innovative. There are so many great things they can do to expand Technorati, and if I had some more time, I probably would have posted them in this article. Maybe I'll write another article on the ways to fix and improve Technorati in the future. I'd just love for them to announce some things they have planned out for the future (if any) to try and bring the site back to life. Most of all, I'd love to see them make use of their community. Give us ways to interact, to help regulate Technorati, to improve it and to make it useful. It would be interesting to see MyBlogLog try to shift it's way to try to compete even more directly with Technorati. Maybe that will keep them on their toes. It is a sure thing though that Technorati is possibly feeling pressure to innovate, so I'm sure we will see some huge new improvements coming out by the end of the year or early next year. If not, then some more management changes might be in the not so distant future for the company. Will be fun to see what they do. I'd actually love to see a representative of Technorati take some time and react to this article, even if it was just to leave a comment. Oh well. Now I am officially off to bed :P Nice night/day to everyone.

Its not completely dead, but

Its not completely dead, but there is little life left. I have been browsing around, and decided to try and make it work. The WTF section is kind of jacked up, and I see some crazy stuff voted on that looks like spam votes. Hopefully it gets resurrected, as it was once very awesome

Yeah, I think it is

Yeah, I think it is disturbing that people think those numbers are worthwhile. Of course, if you are someone that is analyzing blog statistics, but don't pay attention to details, that person wouldn't know and would probably not care. With Alexa, I know my site ranks at 581,669 amongst all users who use the Alexa toolbar. Not all sites, are fairly considered, and most of the sites are biased towards sites that techy people would use, but I know where I rank amongst that group. With Technorati.... I don't understand what my rank means. I rank around 950,000 of sites that have posted a link to my site? That means, I could just go out asking for people to link to me, posting my link on many sites as possible, and improving my rank. That means nothing to me. I could understand if those stats were natural, and there were ways to maybe validate the authority and reactions, but there is nothing there but a link contest. I'm not an expert on SEO, but I do know that it isn't only how many people link to your site that determines where they will rank in a search, so it makes sense that Technorati would have other methods to rank blogs. That is why I think the awareness needs to be raised about it. I would love to see Technorati improve itself. The ranking system needs to be overhauled though for this to happen in my opinion though. Simple people who don't pay attention to detail would not care, but us who like to pay attention to the details and know what we are really dealing with might care enough. I'm one of those that does care and wants the service to improve. Plus, it's like you said Jeff, people and businesses do believe the Technorati ranks are useful. With that being true, and Technorati hosting this service, I believe it should be their responsibility to ensure that the results are as fair as possible. If not, everyone who understands this should be raising hell with the company. I've seen many bloggers posting similar articles, and I feel it is our duty to do so. If they had ways to police this, I'd be satisfied. If they had ways to have the community assist in proper rankings, I'd be satisfied. If they had at least 2 methods of assigning a rank to a site, I'd be somewhat satisfied. The current system though is flawed. It needs to be changed. You and I both know that no ranking system is ever going to be perfect, but you and I also know that there should be methods in place to have those results at least be difficult to manipulate. If I wanted to, I could spend a day or two spamming Tech In Demand everywhere and I'm confident I could break into the top 250,000. It just seems wrong, and I'm sure people do that. It just makes me a bit worried that Technorati talks about their authority system, but fails to acknowledge that it is heavily flawed and doesn't appear to be trying to make any improvements since the creation of the system. End of rant. I'm just upset with Technorati and their lack of innovation and willingness to try and improve their services. Hopefully they change. Sorry if I repeated myself a couple of times, or if I had an insane amount of errors in there, I'm just ready to pass out. I think I'm heading off to bed :)

Interesting take on the

Interesting take on the Technoratie debacle. It seems to be that the trechnorati rank and authority numbers still seem to be worthy of something since quite a few people still think those numbers are valuable. Time for Google BlogSearch to take over?

I don't know if it is

I don't know if it is completely dead just yet, but if things continue as they have been, then it is certainly a likely possibility.

Seems dead to me.
